Oh the people I'll hire.

5 behaviorally based questions

·     Tell me about a time you had to work as a part of a team and what you accomplished.
·     Tell me about a time you had to stand up for what you believed in.
·     Tell me about a time you had to “go the extra mile” to get a job done.
·     Tell me about a situation in which you felt completely over your head and what you did to resolve the problem.
·     Tell me about a time when you had to think quickly on your feet and adjust to a new situation.  How did you cope?  How did it work out?

What I learned

1. Share what you had expected to learn about the topic before the class.- I expected to learn the best way to hire an employee best for my department.  I expected we would talk about the best questions to ask.

2. What you actually learned from the unit.-
5 minutes.  An employer spends all of 5 minutes preparing to interview potential employees.

3. How you will utilize the information learned in your nursing practice.-
After class I thought a lot about the hiring process in general, and after learning how much it costs an employer to replace an employee, I can understand better how important it is to hire the right person!  I learned that in order to really one candidate with another, I would need to ask the exact same questions to really be able to compare apples to apples.  I like the idea of asking behaviorally based questions, as they seem to tell not only how well a person thinks on their feet, but also gives a good glimpse into their personality.  In my opinion, through these types of questions you can get a good idea not only if they are a good fit for the job and if they are qualified, but you can also learn if that person will make a good fit with the team you already have hired.  Being a good functioning and happy team can increase patient satisfaction, and retain good employees for a longer time.

4. You personal feelings about the material covered.-
I think the info learned will super useful in the future!  Hopefully I can also use what I learned to GET a good job, so I can hire in the future.
