Power Hungry again...

1. Share what you had expected to learn about the topic before the class.
From the articles we had to read before class, I expected we would discuss the differences between men and women in power.  I also expected we would discuss what power is and what it can do, good or bad.
2. What you actually learned from the unit.
We discussed the “chain of command” of a typical nursing unit.  It is as follows:
CEO                                         $250k- 750k
CNO                                         $125k-450k
Assistant CNO                        $125k-300k
Division Manager                   $100k-150k
Section Manager
Manager/Educator $85k-100k./House manager $55k-70k
Charge Nurse                         $47k-50k
RN                                            $45k

We also discussed the things that come with power, or what gives power…these included
   Money
   Influence
   Looks
   Status
   Control
   Strategy
   Family Hx
We then worked as a group to discuss whether men or women make better leaders in regards to certain positions.  Our results were:
Who makes a better political leader-Over all we had--àwomen
    In public office-women
   Representing-women
Standing up for what they believe-women
   Social issues- women
   Crime-men
   Public safety-men
   National security & Defense-men
3. How you will utilize the information learned in your nursing practice.
The things we learned from the video clips about how men and women think differently will definitely influence the way I perceive a man’s behavior.  I’m sure I’ll react differently (and probably kinder) to how a person leads, male or female.
4. Your personal feelings about the material covered.

Interesting as always.  I usually hate comparing men and women because I feel as though it shouldn’t matter what gender we are.  But the information learned about the differences in how we think was great!  All that will just make us better leaders in the future.
